5TH GRADE MATH EXPECTATIONS:

Saxon Math

  • Students complete all Problem Set problems on looseleaf or box paper each day.
  • Problems are recycled—in other words, example problems taught earlier in the year will be seen again from lesson to lesson.  To help check this, in parentheses under each problem there is a number, which is the lesson to refer back to for help.
  • Students correct their own math problems each day.  They are then encouraged to self-correct their mistakes by showing the work and/or explaining what they did wrong the first time.
  • Students complete a daily timed test (60-100 problems in 5 minutes) and mental math (5-10 problems).
  • Math grade breakdown:  25% homework, 25% quizzes (weekly) 50% tests
  • Math homework breakdown:  Students will receive a “9” on an assignment in which they received or corrected 90% of the problems or better (A work).  They will receive a “8” on an assignment in which they received or corrected 81-89% (B work).  They will receive a “7” for 80% or less (C work).  A "0" will be given for any assignment not turned in.  The goal of daily math problems is to learn from mistakes.  If they are learning from mistakes, then by quiz and test days, they should do fairly well. Students must show their work in order to receive full credit on problems that require multi-steps.
  • There is no “retesting” or “correcting” tests or quizzes.  Solving daily problems is the practice and correcting.  Tests and quizzes will show what they have challenged themselves to understand.  Students must show their work in order to receive full credit on problems that require multi-steps.

5th Grade Schedule and Specialists: Schedule_09-10.xls

Powerschool is a great tool to check grades on a weekly basis. Thanks for keeping up with your child's grades!

Did you know?

  • Each student should be writing assignments in his/her assignment notebook each night and should be asking you to check over the work (if needed) and signing his/her assignment notebook. Thanks for reminding them about this important skill process! If you do take homework out of the file folder, PLEASE put it back in there. Papers in the file folder are ones we currently NEED for class each day! (Monday green folder papers are the only homework papers that can stay at home!) Thanks for your help!

  • Assignments should be completed neatly, completely, and ON TIME! Homework 1 day late receives a maximum of 75% of the total points possible, 2 days late receives a maximum of 50% of the points possible, 3 days late receives a maximum of 25% of the points possible, and more than 3 days late must be handed in but a 0 will be given for that assignment.

  • There is daily 8:00 AM Mass at Sacred Heart Church. Students gather on Wednesdays for an all-school Mass with the parishioners. On the third Wednesday of each month students will lead us in song. Fifth graders lead Mass on May 26th. Please join us if you can.
