Character Counts is our theme for this year.
Again, AR points are required for all 6th, 7th, and 8th graders as a project grade in Literature. Your child has set a goal again this trimester based on the increased point levels. Please check with your child as to what his/her goal is. Look for easier parent access to AR points coming home with report cards this Friday.
Guidelines for points:
6th
C15, B20, A25, Bonus 30
7th
C20, B25, A30, Bonus 35
8th
C25, B30, A35, Bonus 40
We will be starting the book The Cricket in Times Square by George Selden. We will be answering questions on this book.
For English, we are working on adverbs next.
**CHANGE for 3rd Tri: Spelling pretests are given on Monday and posttests on Friday. We have finished with the 5th grade Spelling series. We will move all students into the 6th grade challenge lists starting with week 23. I still assign spelling work on Monday, and it is due on Thursday. I will post the list on this site incase your child looses his/her list.
Ask your child what he/she set for his/her AR (Accelerated Reader) goal. Goals have again increased with the new trimester. Watch for new parent tracking for AR points coming home with the report cards.

Seventh grade is reading The Giver by Lois Lowry. We are taking quizzes on the chapters as we read them. Third trimester will start with quizzes on chapters 13-14.
We are working on our big research paper. I teach them step-by-step the process from idea to final product. I like to see much of it done together in class. At this point we have chosen our topics and are getting ready to start doing research. Two books/periodicals are required for 2/5 needed sources. Many students are able to get books from our library, but please note that you might be asked to visit the public library also. At this point there is not a due date as we take it one step at a time. Although, I'd like to see notecards before spring break, but I'll keep you posted. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call. Your child has the rubric for the paper already.
Remember to read for AR points!!!
On Monday 8th grade will start A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle. We will have vocabulary words and multiple choice quizzes on the chapters as we read.
In English we are working on Adverbs!
Start reading for AR points early. Spring fever sets in early, and also, the eighth grade has the play in May. Don't put reading AR off!!!!
